For these hair trails I used Xgen and nparticles. I found them both easy to use however I feel nparticles is easier to customise as I feel it is less time consuming. Grooming the splines in xgen requires a lot of time to make the hair look good especially if your trying to create a particular style. You can easily adjust the length and width of the splines with brushes to precisely customise the look you want. You can also plug in texture maps to customise the look further. With nparticles I felt it was quicker to customise the hair as it had sliders to adjust the look. Further more you can also use texture maps to customise further.
After spending an hour on both of these trials I definitely feel the nparticles trial was more successful. As you can see from the example the hair is a lot more natural and I was able to add forces to it to make it flow. I was also able to add texture in the form of twist and waves. The Xgen trials look less natural to me as although the width of the hair is ok using the grooming brush was difficult. This was because if you had many splines and you groomed them some of the splines went inside the model and almost folded over them selves and it was difficult to correct the mistakes.
